In April 2008 legislation comes into force which means that new buildings, major refurbishments and large public buildings throughout England and Wales must have an energy certificate to rate the energy performance of the building. There are two types of energy certificates:
-
The Energy Performance Certificate (EPC), which is required for all buildings when they are constructed, sold or rented.
-
The Display Energy Certificate (DEC), which is required for large public buildings occupied by public authorities or institutions providing a public service to a large number of people - these will show the actual energy usage of a building and need to be displayed at all times.
Accredited Building Energy Assessors
(non-dwelling) will produce these energy certificates.
To become an Energy Assessor you have to join an Accredited Energy Assessor
scheme. The government have licensed several scheme providers who are able to
offer a route to becoming an Energy Assessor. A list of scheme
providers with links to their websites can be found at: http://www.communities.gov.uk/planningandbuilding/theenvironment/energyperformance/energyassessorqualification/accreditationstatement/ For
more information on becoming an Energy Assessor you should contact one of the
Accredited Scheme providers on this list.
Software
Interface Training for EPC's
Part of the Criteria for Energy Assessors is to show competence in production of EPC’s
using an Approved interface to SBEM. Hevacomp are offering
both courses and exams that will cover this aspect of becoming an Energy
Assessor using the Hevacomp interface.
Hevacomp's exam is currently accepted by CIBSE and Stroma as showing
competence in using Hevacomp's approved SBEM interface to produce EPC's and PartL
results for Building Control submission. Hevacomp are also working with
other scheme providers to have this exam accepted. Below are details of the courses
